In winter, we think about moisturising our hands and face, much less our feet. Yet between the heating, closed shoes and the cold, the skin on our feet dries out quickly, especially on the heels. A few minutes a week are enough to keep them soft and comfortable.
In short
- Moisturise your feet in the evening, especially the heels.
- A gentle scrub once a week is enough.
- Choose a warm foot bath over a hot one.
- Soft, breathable slippers extend the benefits.
Why feet dry out in winter
Dry air from heating, hot showers and closed shoes all day put the skin to the test. The heels, which carry your body weight, are often the first to become rough or even cracked.
6 steps for an effective routine
1. A warm foot bath
Ten minutes in warm, not hot, water to soften the skin and relax your feet after the day. Water that's too hot dries the skin even more.
2. A gentle scrub, once a week
With a pumice stone or a suitable scrub, gently work on the heels and rough areas. No need to rub hard: regularity matters more than intensity.
3. Dry carefully
Dry well between the toes to avoid moisture that encourages irritation.
4. A moisturising cream in the evening
Massage in a foot cream, especially on the heels. Evening is the best time: the skin has all night to benefit.
5. Cotton or wool socks
After the cream, a pair of soft socks helps the skin stay moisturised and keeps your feet warm.
6. Breathable slippers
At home, lined, breathable slippers protect from cold floors and from sweating alike. Our Merano slipper, lined up to the ankle, is designed to be worn for long periods without clammy feet.

Mistakes to avoid
- Cutting skin or calluses yourself with a sharp tool.
- Taking very hot, very long foot baths.
- Wearing damp shoes several days in a row.
If you have deep cracks, pain or are diabetic, ask a podiatrist or your doctor for advice.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you moisturise your feet in winter?
Ideally every evening, or at least several times a week if your skin is very dry.
Can you sleep in socks after applying cream?
Yes, clean socks that aren't too tight help the cream absorb and keep your feet warm.
Do lined slippers make your feet sweat?
Not if they're breathable. A dense but airy lining keeps the warmth in without trapping moisture.
