There are slippers you love on day one and forget at the back of the cupboard a month later, and those you slip on every evening for years. The difference lies in a few details we don't always look at when buying. Here they are.
In short
- A dense lining keeps its softness longer than a thin one.
- A cushioned, non-slip sole is the key to comfort.
- A cuff at the ankle keeps warmth where it escapes.
- A neutral colour means you'll wear them for longer.
The 4 criteria of a good slipper
1. A lining that doesn't flatten
Thin linings get compressed under the heel within weeks. A dense faux-fur lining, like the one in our Merano slipper, keeps its softness much longer, especially if you brush it from time to time.
2. A sole that supports and grips
A cushioned insole that follows the arch prevents fatigue, and a non-slip outsole prevents slips on tiles.
3. A shape that wraps the ankle
A slipper that rises slightly with a wide cuff stops cold air getting in at the back of the foot. That's the detail that makes the difference in the depths of winter.
4. Easy to slip on
If you have to bend down to put on your slippers, you end up not wearing them. A style that slips on in a second, with no laces or buckles, becomes a reflex.

Which colour to choose?
Black and brown are the most practical day to day. Beige and camel have a very soft, cosy feel. Grey is a good compromise, and pink adds a touch of tenderness. The Merano comes in all six colours, EU sizes 36 to 41.
Slipper, clog or indoor bootie?
The slipper is the warmest for home. The lined clog, like the Bormio, is quicker to slip on and lets you step outside. The outdoor slipper, like the Alba, works indoors and out thanks to its treaded platform sole. To compare, read indoor or outdoor slippers: what's the difference?
Frequently asked questions
Should you buy slippers in your size or one size up?
Your size if you're comfortably in it, one size up if you're between two sizes. The lining settles slightly over the first few wears. See our guide what size to choose.
How long do good slippers last?
Well cared for and worn in rotation, several winters. Brush the lining regularly and avoid drying them on a radiator.
Are slippers without animal materials just as warm?
Yes. Warmth comes mainly from the density of the lining and the thickness of the sole, not the origin of the material.
