A few years ago, "vegan shoe" often meant compromise: stiff material, a plasticky look, average comfort. Today, microfibres have come a long way and offer a soft feel and real durability. Here's what you need to know before choosing.
In short
- A vegan shoe contains no animal-derived materials, glue and lining included.
- Modern microfibres offer a feel close to suede.
- Care is usually simple: a damp cloth and a soft brush.
- Quality depends on the density of the material and the construction.
What is a vegan shoe?
A vegan shoe is made without any animal-derived material: no leather, no suede, no wool, no animal fur. The whole shoe is concerned, from the upper to the lining. At Breya, all our shoes are made of vegan suede, a dense microfibre with a peach-skin feel, and our faux-fur linings are synthetic too.
The everyday benefits
A soft feel from day one
Vegan suede doesn't need breaking in: it's soft and supple from the very first wear.
Simple care
A damp cloth and a soft brush are enough in most cases. No special leather products to buy. Our guide: caring for vegan suede.
A more affordable price
For the same comfort, a microfibre shoe is generally more affordable than a suede leather shoe.
A choice that matches your values
For those who prefer not to wear animal materials, it's the simplest solution.

How do you spot a good vegan shoe?
- The density of the material: a dense microfibre holds its shape better over time.
- The sole: cushioned inside, treaded outside.
- The finish: even stitching, a sturdy buckle, neat bonding.
- The label: in Europe, the composition of the upper, lining and sole must be stated.
Common misconceptions
"It's not as warm." Warmth depends mainly on the lining and the thickness of the sole. Our winter styles, like the Cortina bootie, are sherpa-lined up to the ankle.
"It doesn't breathe." A well-designed microfibre is breathable, unlike old stiff faux leathers.
"It wears out quickly." A dense material, well cared for and worn in rotation, lasts several seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Is vegan suede the same as microsuede?
They're two similar textile materials, but the vegan suede we use is a denser microfibre. See the differences.
Can you wear vegan shoes in the rain?
A shower isn't a problem. Let them air-dry, then brush.
Are faux-fur linings vegan?
At Breya, yes: all our faux-fur linings are synthetic.
