An armchair, a lamp, a blanket and a pile of books: you don't need much more to create a little refuge at home. A well-designed reading nook makes you want to read more, and quickly becomes your favourite spot in the house. Here's how to set it up.
In short
- Choose a spot near a source of natural light.
- A comfortable seat is the centrepiece.
- An adjustable lamp for the evening is essential.
- Think about your feet: footrest, blanket, slippers.
1. Find the right spot
Ideally near a window, to enjoy daylight. A corner of the living room, the end of a wide hallway, a corner of the bedroom or even a deep windowsill can work. The key is to be a little away from foot traffic and screens.
2. Choose the right seat
An enveloping armchair with armrests, a chaise longue, a large pouf or a bench with cushions: choose a seat you can stay in for an hour without moving. The backrest should support your lower back.
3. Get the lighting right
By day, natural light. In the evening, an adjustable lamp with warm light, placed behind or beside your shoulder, to light the page without glare.
4. Add textiles
A soft blanket, one or two cushions, a rug under the armchair: textiles add warmth and absorb noise.
5. Think about your feet
It's often forgotten, but foot comfort matters a lot when you sit still for a long time. A footrest or pouf, and a pair of lined slippers or clogs, like the Bormio clog, keep you from getting cold after twenty pages.

6. Add a small table
To put down a mug, a bookmark, your glasses. A simple side table or a wooden stool is enough.
7. Keep books within reach
A small bookcase, a wall shelf or a basket: keep the books you're reading and those waiting for you close by.
8. Add a personal touch
A plant, a candle, a frame: whatever makes this corner truly yours.
