Smelly slippers: 7 simple solutions (without damaging them)

It's a topic people rarely talk about, but everyone knows it: after a few weeks of winter, smelly slippers. The warm, soft lining we love so much also holds on to moisture. Good news: with a few simple habits, you can fix the problem without damaging your slippers.

The essentials

  • The smell almost always comes from moisture trapped in the lining.
  • Baking soda, left overnight, is the simplest and most effective solution.
  • Let them air-dry, never on a radiator or in the tumble dryer.
  • Alternating two pairs is the best way to prevent the problem.

Why do slippers end up smelling?

Feet sweat naturally, even at rest. In a lined slipper worn several hours a day, that moisture doesn't have time to evaporate. It builds up, and that is what ends up causing the smell. The solution comes down to three things: dry, absorb, air out.

7 solutions that work

1. Baking soda, overnight

Pour a tablespoon of baking soda into each slipper, shake to spread it, leave it overnight, then empty carefully and vacuum up the rest. It's the simplest and gentlest method for the lining.

2. A thorough airing

In the evening, don't leave them in a closed cupboard: put them near a slightly open window, opening facing up.

3. Newspaper

Crumpled up and slipped into each slipper, it absorbs moisture in a few hours. Replace it the next day.

4. Cedar wood or lavender sachets

Between wears, they absorb moisture and leave a pleasant scent.

5. Clean socks

Wearing your slippers with thin cotton or wool socks protects the lining, and the socks can go in the washing machine. All our ideas are in clogs and socks: how to wear them.

6. Gentle cleaning

For vegan velvet, a slightly damp cloth and a soft brush are enough on the upper. Avoid soaking the lining. The full guide: washing and caring for your slippers.

7. Rotating two pairs

This is the real long-term solution: one pair dries while you wear the other. With a bundle of 2 pairs at €59.98, alternating is easy.

What not to do

  • Dry them on a radiator or with a hairdryer: direct heat can warp the sole and the lining.
  • Put them in the tumble dryer.
  • Spray them with perfume: the smell comes back stronger, mixed with the perfume.
  • Store them still damp in a closed cupboard.

What if the smell won't go away?

If nothing works after several attempts, the lining is probably worn out. That is often a sign it's time for a new pair, as we explain in when should you replace your slippers. For feet that get warm quickly, see also warm slippers that don't make your feet sweat.

Frequently asked questions

Can lined slippers go in the washing machine?

We advise against it for our vegan velvet models: gentle hand cleaning better preserves the shape, the sole and the lining.

Does baking soda damage the lining?

No, as long as you remove it properly after one night, by shaking and then vacuuming.

Should you wear socks with lined slippers?

It's not essential, as the lining is soft against the skin. But thin socks protect the lining and limit odours.
